I Thought This Was Funny...

So, I was over at Fandom Wank and on the front page is wank from last night's episode of SPN.

Now, this is no normal wank. Oh no. It has to do with the fact that SPN made a nod to the fandom, but in some people's opinion, not in a good way.

Here is the wank itself, complete with links. Basically, the uproar is over Dean and Sam going on to the internet and discovering "Wincest". They both agree it's "sick" and then I'm sure, move on.

However, there is outcry from some of the fandom that love Wincest. Now me? I can take it or leave it. Truthfully, I've watched maybe four total episodes of the show and I have no opinion one way or the other. I can say that I love watching fangirls froth at the mouth and wank till there's no tomorrow. So, yes, this wank tickled me in a good way.

It also caught my eye since I know that I have a few good friends on my flist that absolutely love the show. Because of that, I thought it would be fun to post it here in case they don't read Fandom Wank.

If there are those on my flist that like Wincest or slash or just het, I'm cool with whatever floats your boat and I don't judge. Hell, I enjoy slash a lot, and I love my het pairings too. I love fandom because it's fandom in all its wacky glory. I've been around the Harry Potter fandom for a loooooooong time and we all know how batshit it got (and can still be). I can say that I have no vested interest in SPN fandom. Again, four episodes. So, it doesn't hurt me that Wincest was poked with a stick. It amuses the hell out of me.

In other news, I made brownies today. Tomorrow is homemade chicken pot pie and then I'm going to make pulled pork. My sister is driving, with her kids, to Reno and will be there for a week. She wanted me to go, but there is no way I'm driving for about ten hours in a car with three kids. Three kids whose only fun is to fight all the damn time. No thanks. I told Leslie the only way I'd go is if I had a rental car and a separate hotel room. I will spend this weekend cleaning and organizing my mom's recipes.

I cheered Kripke on for that. It was like saying f you to those that like wincest...I mean slash is one thing (hell, I read it sometimes), but incest??? Those people have issues...and have they actually seen the show? Any fan who was offended by this epi, not sure really a fan, and needs to grow up.

I can't believe I forgot to watch that episode, even after you reminded me to. I had no idea what it was about *mock glare* or I would have recorded it.

I think it's awesome when a show mentions it's fandom. How many of them actually do that? None that I know. So, for it to even have a whole show revolve around it is really cool.

I don't watch that show, either. I've read some crazy fanfiction in the past and anything that contains incest just makes me want to run away and hide.

Mmmmmm brownies, chicken pot pie, and pulled pork.

I can't wait to eat tonight! LOL! And it's only noon!

I'll let you know how they turned out.

I thought that episode was hilarious. Not only did the writers poke fun at fandom but they also made fun of themselves, calling some of the past failboat episodes "BAD WRITING". LOL! In addition, they also gave some pretty serious nods to meta in this fandom (the laundry mat scene with Sam actually sorting whites from darks and *possibly* the red color theme). I don't know many other shows that have executives and writing staff (Gamble especially who has a knack for continuity and past episode call backs as well as seem plugged into what fans WANT TO SEE) who pander to the fans in such a way. While it's inevitable some people would be upset by this episode (this is fandom), I think overall most of fandom found it to be quite funny and took it in the spirit that it was intended. I know there are wanktastic people screaming and throwing tantrums, but I think they likely scream and throw tantrums about pretty much everything (and probably take themselves and fandom too seriously). I say let them wank themselves silly and give each other ulcers in their dark corner of ridiculousness.

I agree! I agree with your whole comment, but didn't want to C&P the whole thing. LOL. It cracks me up how seriously fandoms are taken and the absolute chaos it devolves into when one section finds something to bitch about.

Yeah, the SPN fandom is especially "passionate" and detail-oriented. Many times we've been called "rabid" by the media, and judging by the fact that most anything (including RL stuff about the actors) turns into wank, I think there's a grain of truth to that. But for every wanky person there's probably 10 non-wanktastic fans who are happily watching. After all, the squeaky wheel gets all the attention and those relatively few people make the rest of us look like a group of nonsensical, fanatical complainers.

I think non-fandom's perception of Wincest may be the same. Because a certain portion of fandom subscribes to it and incest is controversial and taboo and, therefore, sensational, non-fandom people latch onto it for its shock factor and likely have this perception that the entire fandom reads/writes/believes it. I think only someone who is involved in the fandom knows how diverse peoples' tastes actually are.

I don't have a problem with Wincest being that Sam and Dean are fictional characters; I don't see why people can't write whatever they want about them. But RPS, for me, crosses some personal RL boundaries when intimate, explicit things are written about real people and their real families and real events. But it doesn't mean I don't think other people should be prohibited from writing RPS or think it's disgusting and wrong of them to do so. Fandom is built on the premise of doing/writing/saying pretty much do whatever you want (it exists because people want an outlet for things that don't happen in canon), which includes contributing to wank, writing incestuous stories or RPS. I think we're all entitled to our own opinions, and making ewww faces and condemning people for their personal tastes or getting offended about what was written or not written in an episode is fine for some people, but Wincest and RPS and kink and all the trappings that come with human behavior and psyches are part of fandom and are here to stay. I say stop pointing fingers and find people who think the same way you do and go be happy in your corner of fandom.

Sorry, *looks around* suddenly this got long. *blinks* Oops. Sorry for polluting your journal.

You're not polluting my LJ, believe me. I have to say a big resounding "word" to everything you've just written.

I'm happy with my fandoms, even the extremely crazy ones because there are fans that enjoy the same things I do and we can discuss them. I also enjoy other aspects to fandom and am willing to read fics or pairings outside my own comfort zone because they are just that good.

How are you feeling? Did you wrestle A to the ground over BBQ yet? LOL!

[identity profile] bowtrunckle.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think my comment actually got accepted because LJ was having a difficult moment and just sat there. I thought, "Oh, maybe I wrote too much," and it was probably for the best nobody had to be subjected to my blabbering. But, oh hey, it posted. O_o

I agree with you, I like fandom for the discussions! And the silliness. Strange as it is, I don't read too much fic. The giant fic part of the SPN fandom is probably the part I spend the least time running around in. I guess it just goes to show how cool I think the other parts of this fandom are!

I'm feeling OK, thanks. Still no BBQ (or giant chunks of meat or sauce or complex, mixed foods), but I'm hoping by the time people start pulling out their BBQs and summer party spreads I'll be able to eat EVERYTHING I want to. *salivates* For now, my new favorite things are pineapples, strawberries, and trail mix with M&Ms. Heh, thankfully I can still stomach chocolate! \o/

How are you? Still planning on moving soon? It's been so long since we've properly caught up. *hug*

I thought the episode was clever and hilarious. I loved that it poked fun at fandom, but to me, they also poked fun at themselves and had fun while giving fans some fun. It was win win and so very original. What a concept to use modern fan outlets like fanfiction to make a show. Those writers deserve a pat on the back for being able to make us cry in one episode and then lightening the load in the next. What other show can switch like that and still have a following? About that episode, I have one word. Yay!
Oh, and I made blondies with Mackenzie the other day and they were so yummy. Good luck with cooking and baking.

[identity profile] emma-moon.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! I agree! I watched the episode online and nearly burst a gut laughing so hard.

I want blondies. LOL! I have a new storage area and I'm putting all of my baking stuff there so I can free up some room in the kitchen. My tiny, tiny kitchen. Haha!

*hugs to you all
